What is sight glass?
Sight glasses can consist of a plastic or glass tube connected to a pipe system or tank by means of a flange, thread or welded connection. The liquid level in a sight glass will be the same as the level in the pipework or tank.
Why use sight glass?
Imagine you want to observe some equipment or liquid in a container. Unfortunately, you can't get to it or see it unless the contents come out of the container. That's where sight glass comes in. With the transparent glass - also known as sight glass or inspection glass - you can inspect and monitor a process from the outside.
This means that you can, for example, examine gases, quantity, temperature, colour or whether the process is going as desired, while remaining safe inside a closed container. This way you can separate instruments and measuring devices from industrial processes.
For example, maybe you want to check for particles, fluid flow or a specific colour in the liquid? Then you can use the sight glass to look directly in from the outside. This method is especially useful in the food, medical, offshore, marine and transport industries.
However, be aware that high pressure has an impact on what temperature the glass can withstand. For example, pressurised steam is a very aggressive process for ordinary glass. Here you need to take special precautions.

You can be completely safe when using our sight glass. Generally speaking, glass is resistant to most chemicals. Furthermore, our glass is pressure resistant up to 10 bar and comes in different thicknesses. This means that you can use the glass in many different ways when you want to see or examine the condition of the flowing medium.
In our selection we offer some of the best stainless steel sight glasses that are compatible with ASME BPE fittings, unless you have other requirements. The material itself will usually be the same as the rest of the pipework or tank that the sight glass is mounted on.

For example, a sight glass can be mounted on a pipe system or on a tank, giving the glass the shape of a porthole. It has no internal components, so you can only see if liquid is present and if there is flow. If you also want to see how fast the liquid is flowing through the sight glass, you can add an impeller that rotates.
Another option is as an upright and transparent tube in glass or plastic. Here, a cone inside the tube will show how high, for example, a liquid level is - either as precise markings on the glass or in the form of a 4-20 mA signal. When it comes to level measurement, a sight glass also allows you to read flow rates.
